BONE GRAFT

We will make your smile look as happy as you feel

Q. What is bone grafting?

Bone grafts and bone augmentation procedures are used to prepare an area of the jaw bone to receive a dental implant.Bone grafting is especially important immediately after a tooth is removed to preserve an adequate amount of bone and prevent bone shrinkage. The goal is to maintain enough bone in the area to adequately support and stabilize the implant. Thus, this is known as a bone preservation procedure.

If bone loss already occured because the tooth was removed in the past, then the area may need to undergo guided bone regeneration instead. In this case, bone grafts and gum grafts may both be needed in order to generate enough new tissue in the area for proper implant support.

Q. When Should bone grafting be performed?

In most instances, bone preservation has better and more predictable outcomes than guided bone regeneration. This is why bone grafting should be performed at the time of tooth extraction if you are at all considering a dental implant as a tooth replacement option.Skipping the bone graft may mean more expensive surgeries and more costs down the line.

Q. What are some benefits of bone grafting?

Oftentimes bone grafting is done in conjunction with tooth extraction. This means that the procedure can be accompanied by some level of soreness and discomfort. Your dentist will give you instructions on post-surgical care.

When teeth are lost , the jaw bone shrinks rapidly. Most of these changes occur in the first 3 months . In fact within the first year , 50 % of the jaw bone is lost and by the 3rd year the shrinkage is as much as 40 to 60 %.

The volume and quality of bone available for dental implants is important. Recently, with advances in surgical techniques and bone graft materials , we now have the ability to grow bone . As a result of bone grafting for dental implants, many patients with inadequate jaw bone can now be restored to function and aesthetics with dental implants.

Your periodontist may suggest procedures to regenerate bone or gum tissue lost in certain areas where the bone loss pattern is conducive for regeneration. Bone grafting is where natural or synthetic bone is used to provide a scaffold for promoting bone growth.

Bone grafting is a procedure that stabilizes or replaces bone. You may require a bone grafting procedure as a result of tooth extraction, gum disease or other reasons. Because the bone helps to support the teeth and hold them in place, bone grafting can help provide a solid foundation for your existing teeth or strengthen a new dental implant.

Q. What can i expect from a bone grafting procedure?

Good teeth whitening candidates should be free of gum disease, tooth decay, or tooth infection. Good candidates for teeth whitening should also have stains that can be removed with topical bleaching. Intrinsic stains, particularly those caused by fluorosis and antibiotics can be incredibly resistant to tooth whitening. In fact, topical bleaching may enhance these stains as surrounding enamel is lightened. If you have tooth staining that is unlikely to respond to a topical bleach, we will discuss additional options.

Q. When is bone grafting necessary?

When a tooth is removed, the area of jawbone directly beneath or above it begins to recede. This loss of bone can continue over time, often resulting in facial changes such as sunken lips or cheeks.

Q. How is bone grafting done?

It was once thought that dental implants could not be fitted if a patient had insufficient jawbone. Thanks to advances in medical technology, however, bone can now be rebuilt. The procedure involves adding bone or bone like materials to the jaw. After grafting you will have to wait several months for the grafted material to fuse with the existing bone.

Bone grafting is a procedure where bone is used to reconstruct areas in the jaw with inadequate bone, so that implants can be placed. The source of bone can be either patients’ own bone, or artificial bone made from calcium particles.
